Easy import to Excel from SharePoint

While working on SharePoint content, many of us have been through the situation where we wished that “Only if Microsoft provided export option for this content”.

Although with PowerShell scripts you can export most of the required data, but most of the time using PowerShell script might not be feasible. Also the end users hate to go back to IS guys each time because of the kind of delays. So here is a good short cut that you can use to export data from SharePoint sites.  Remember though, you will need to clean the exported data once you have exported it because the export might be in a very raw format.

1.       Open Excel

2.       Go to the data ribbon and click on “From Web” button

3.       Provide the SharePoint site where you want to import data from

4.       As the message just below the address bar says, you would find a&nbsp in various places.  These are the areas which you can import. When you hover over the image it shows you the data it can import. You can click multiple arrows on different pages and everything will be imported in one sheet.

5.       Click import and you are done.

You can use this in sites other than SharePoint sites also, however it also depends on how your site is structured and developed.

Hope this saves some time.
