SharePoint: Navigation

Site navigation provides the primary interface for site users to move around on the sites and pages on your site. Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 includes a set of customizable and extensible navigation features that help orient users of your site so they can move around on its sites and pages.
Following are some of the basic elements of SharePoint Navigation:-

1.       Navigate Up

2.       Title Bar

3.       Top Link Bar

4.       Quick Launch

5.       Tree View

6.       Recycle Bin

7.       All Site Content

To control and manage the navigation control of a site or page, you can check the site setting page for Navigation.

Site Actions > Site Setting > Navigation (Look and feel section)

To manage tree view or Quick launch navigation control you can go to:

Site Actions > Site Setting > Tree view(Look and feel section)

Further Customization can be done on the SharePoint page using SharePoint designer or Custom webparts.

Apart from the basic Navigation controls shown above, SharePoint provides many webparts that can be used in the page layout or body to provide better navigation.

  • Summary Links
  • Table of Contents
  • Content Query
  • Categories
  •  Site Aggregator
  • Site in Category
  •  Tag Cloud

Please note that availability of these webpart depends on the kind of site you are working on and also whether your site administrator has enabled/disabled them.
